The soldier boy in the poem Small Pain in My Chest by Michael Mack looks apologetic. Why?

The soldier boy was very confident about his strength and capability. So he did not even imagine the situation he is in now. He cannot truly believe and is ashamed of the fact that he is down only with a ‘small pain’ in his chest. That is to say, a sense of failure is there in his mind. That is why he is a bit apologetic in his tone.
