Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem ‘If Thou Must Love Me’ brings forth the poet’s idea of genuine and unconditional love. In this sonnet she suggests the way her lover Robert should love her. In short, she wanted to set her conditions if the lover had to love her at all. And that is why starting it with the word ‘if’ was necessary for the poet.
