In the third stanza of Robert Browning’s poem “The Patriot”, the speaker is regretful. He’s in utter dismay that his fortune and glory have changed drastically in just one year to take him to his present position where people have misunderstood his deeds and he has been tried and convicted. The very first word of the third stanza “Alack” indicates this regret.
