What were the changes in the time and condition when Vasavadatta and Upagupta met for the first time and again towards the end in Rabindranath Tagore’s poem “Abhisara – The Tryst”?
Upagupta and Vasavadatta met twice in one year, a few months apart.
Their first meeting was in August, during the rainy season, and their second meeting was in April, during spring. Both times, they met at night.
The first time they met, the weather was bad with dark clouds, lightning, and thunder. The second time, it was a beautiful night with a full moon, flute music, and birds singing. Interestingly, the weather during their meetings was the opposite of what Vasavadatta was going through in her life. This might be the poet’s way of showing us how people’s luck can change over time and that the outside world doesn’t always match how we feel inside.
