To me, the most appealing part in Leigh Hunt’s poem “Abou Ben Adhem” is its message and how beautifully it is conveyed through the poem. “Loving one’s fellow men is more virtuous than loving the Almighty Himself” is the message here. This line has been one of the most glorious lines I have ever read —

Write me as one that loves his fellow men.

This is so simple yet so intellectual, so easy to understand yet so difficult to apply in life. It surely touches one’s heart.

Another thing in the poem that appeals greatly is the simplicity and innocence in Abou’s character, how easily he speaks to the divine messenger and puts his request to include his name in the angel’s list as the one who loves his fellow men.
