In the poem The Cold Within written by James Patrick Kinney, comment on the rich man’s attitude towards the poor. Or, What do you understand about the nature of the rich man?
In the poem, the poet’s aim is not to present a rich man with unique personality traits. The rich man depicted here is just a representative of the rich section of the society most of whom probably share same views about the poor. The rich man thinks about the wealth he has in store. He thinks of how to protect what he has earned from the “lazy shiftless poor”. This is more general than particular that the rich people regard the poor as lazy and lacking an aim to work hard. Though this is true to a certain extent, this is also a prejudice the rich has against the poor.
