Is Maya Angelou a phenomenal woman because she is pretty and beautiful? What is her impact upon men and women?
In the poem ‘Phenomenal Woman’ by Maya Angelou, the speaker says that she is not physically pretty by the normal standard. She is not cute and does not have the alluring curves of a fashion model. But still she is beautiful in her own way — in her thought, her actions and her body language — in her personality. That is why she is a phenomenal woman.
Though she is not so womanly beautiful, she has her own ways and has an impact upon others. People respect her for her works, her knowledge, and her higher reach. Men swarm about her like honeybees and they stand up or fall to their knees in respect when she enters the room. Women are curious about the secrets behind her success. Though she tries to tell them and show them her ways, they cannot see her inner mystery. The poet is charming and thus phenomenal in her own way.
